The avocet, unsurprinsgly the emblem of the RSPB, is a conservation success story. Now commonly found on muddy coastal regions. The typical feeding action is a distinctive sideways sweep of its upcurved bill through watery mud seeking small shrimps and other invertebrates.

This avocet carved in spalted beech with beautiful contrasting markings is represented, as so often, busy feeding! It is mounted on a slice of yew with the wavy underbark showing to emulate the edge of the tide.The legs are thin, painted black, bent wire. The overall dimensions of this piece are 230mm high (9") by 380mm long (15") by 150mm wide (6"). The bird itself is 3" wide.
