Bittern

Drainage , and persecution in the 19th century, has resulted in a very restricted British bittern population. The chance of a sighting of this brown mottled bird is further reduced by its highly secretive nature. It has the ability to "freeze" in an upright posture, amongst reeds, making it near impossible to spot. The presence of bitterns in spring is best by hearing the distinctive "booming" call of the male.
