The upcurved bill of this tall and elegant bird is the unmistakable characteristic of the avocet. Almost extinct in 1947, it has made a remarkable comeback . The typical feeding action is a distinctive sideways sweep of its bill through watery mud.

When an avocet is not feeding, it is busy rushing around as presented by this piece. It is carved from a spectacular bit of Spalted Beech, with beautiful complex markings, rescued from the ground in a local forest.It is mounted on a weathered oak half log and the legs are black painted bent wire.The overall dimensions of this piece are 240mm high (9") by 280mm long (11") by 130mm (5") wide.
